Alvin C. York was born at Pall Mall, Tennessee on December 13, 1887. He was drafted into the Army in 1917 and became one of the most decorated American soldiers of World War I. After returning home a hero, Sergeant York wanted to give back to his community and raised funds to establish York Institute. He was married to Gracie Williams York and they had eight children. York died at the Veterans Hospital in Nashville on September 2, 1964, at the age of 76. He is buried in the family plot in the Wolf River Cemetery in Pall Mall.
